Casa Vecchia rte de Santore tel 04.95.65.09.33, info@casa-vecchia.com. A dependable budget option with small chalets set in a leafy garden, 500m south of town, and 200m from the beach. Advance booking essential. May–Sept. €40–55

Du Centre 14 rue Alsace-Lorraine tel 04.95.65.02.01. Somewhat institutional old pension occupying a former police station in a narrow, pretty street near église Ste-Marie-Majeure and harbourside. Rooms are among the cheapest in town, but plain and with shared WC. June–Oct. €40–55

Cyrnea rte de Bastia tel 04.95.65.03.35, peretti.p@wanadoo.fr. Large budget hotel, 20min walk south of town or 300m from the beach. Le Saint François pointe de Saint-François tel 04.95.65.03.61, www.residence-st-francois.com. Tucked away just beyond the citadelle, with sea views. Very central, reasonable prices and clean, if a bit worn around the edges. You also get the use of a pool. €70–85

Il Tramonto rte de Porto tel 04.95.65.04.17. Another excellent little budget hotel, with clean, comfortable and light rooms. Definitely try for one with "vue mer", which have little terraces and superb views over Punta della Revellata. €40–55

La Villa 2km west town along Chemin de Notre-Dame-de-la-Serra tel 04.95.65.10.10, www.hotel-lavilla.com. Spacious cloisters, sunny mosaics, low terracotta roofs and arcades framing sea views give this luxury hotel on the hill above town, one of only a handful of four stars on the island, the feel of a Balagne monastery fused with a Roman villa. There's an exclusive beach too, and helipad should you need one. Over €150.
