With the exception of the modern, clean, but frequently booked-up HI hostel on rue Trencavel (tel 04.68.25.23.16, carcassonne@fuaj.org), the price of staying in the Cité can be high; if you don't mind paying, try the hotel Le Donjon, 2 rue Comte-Roger (tel 04.68.11.23.00, hotel.donjon.best.western@wanadoo.fr; €7085). Hôtel Espace Cité, just outside the main gate at 132 rue Trivalle (tel 04.68.25.24.24, fax 04.68.25.17.17; €3040) has all mod cons and efficient service at reasonable prices. There are, however, some very reasonably priced hotels in the ville basse. Pride of place goes to the Grand Hôtel Terminus, at 2 av de Maréchal Joffre (tel 04.68.25.25.00, fax 04.68.75.53.09; €5570; closed DecFeb), a station-side hotel of decaying steam-age luxury, with a splendid fin-de-siècle facade. The Montségur, 27 allée d'Iéna tel 04.68.25.31.41, hotel.montsegur@wanadoo.fr; €5570), is a comfortable nineteenth-century town house, with ample-size rooms, but is not very close to the Cité. Good economy options include the centrally located Le Cathare, at 53 rue Jean Bringer (tel 04.68.25.65.92, fax 04.68.47.15.02; under €30), and the surprisingly well-equipped St-Joseph, at 81 rue de la Liberté (tel 04.68.71.96.89, fax 04.68.71.36.28; under €30). The campsite, Camping de la Cité, on route St-Hilaire (tel 04.68.25.11.17, fax 04.68.47.33.13), has good shady sites, a shop and some bungalows. Tucked off among parkland to the south of town it can be reached by local bus (line 8) or by foot (about 20min) from the Cité.
