The gare SNCF leads straight into the modern shopping centre on place d'Arc, which fronts onto a huge swathe of busy roads; the old town centre lies on the far side of the traffic. The main tourist office, 6 rue Albert-1er (Mon 10am–1pm & 2–6.30pm, Tues–Sat 9am–1pm & 2–6.30pm; closes 6pm in winter; tel 02.38.24.05.05, www.ville-orleans.fr), is just across the road which runs alongside the shopping centre, and there's another branch near the cathedral, at 6 rue Jeanne d'Arc (Apr–Oct Mon 2–6pm, Tues–Sun 10am–6pm; Nov–March Tues–Sat 2–6pm, Sun 10am–noon). Online, www.orleanscity.com has plenty of information on city events, while www.tourismloiret.com covers the rest of the region. The gare routière, on rue Marcel-Proust, is just up the road from the tourist office.

Accommodation in Orléans is mostly uninspiring, but a few inexpensive central hotels stand out from the rest, and there are plenty of fall-back choices near the station.
