Hôtel d'Artois 94 rue la Boétie, 8e tel 01.43.59.84.12, fax 01.43.59.50.70. One of the cheapest in this, the smartest part of town, with unusually gracious and spacious rooms of the old-fashioned variety. Run by very obliging staff. M° St-Philippe-du-Roule. €40–85

Le Bristol 112 rue du Faubourg St-Honoré, 8e tel 01.53.43.43.00, fax 01.53.43.43.01, www.hotel-bristol.com. The city's most luxurious and spacious hotel manages to remain discreet and warm. Gobelins tapestries and private roof gardens with some of the rooms. A large colonnaded interior garden, as well as the expected swimming pool, health club and gourmet restaurant. Hôtel des Champs-Élysées 2 rue d'Artois, 8e tel 01.43.59.11.42, fax 01.45.61.00.61. The rooms have recently been redecorated in warm colours and all come with shower or bath, plus satellite TV, minibar, hairdryer and safe. Breakfast is served in a converted stone cellar. M° St-Philippe-du-Roule. €70–85

Hôtel de l'Élysée 12 rue des Saussaies, 8e tel 01.42.65.29.25, fax 01.42.65.64.28. Chandeliers and four-posters – classic luxury. M° St-Philippe-du-Roule. €125–150

Hôtel Keppler 12 rue Keppler, 16e tel 01.47.20.65.05, fax 01.47.23.02.29. Rooms are a little small, but spotless and quite comfortable. Located in a quiet street just a few steps from the Arc de Triomphe. M° George-V/Kléber. €70–85

Hôtel Lancaster 7 rue de Berri, 8e tel 01.40.76.40.76, fax 01.40.76.40.00, www.hotel-lancaster.fr. An elegantly restored nineteenth-century town-house with 58 rooms, each retaining original features and antiques, but with a touch of contemporary chic. A small interior zen-style garden and pleasant service make for a relaxing stay. Doubles start at €410. M° George V. Over €150.

The Tuileries

Hôtel Brighton 218 rue de Rivoli, 1er tel 01.47.03.61.61, fax 01.42.60.41.78, hotel.brighton@wanadoo.fr. A smart hotel, with light, airy rooms. Its main asset, however, is the magnificent views of the Tuileries gardens from the front-facing rooms – if your budget stretches to it, go for one with a balcony right at the top. M° Tuileries. Costes 239 rue St-Honoré, 1er tel 01.42.44.50.00, fax 01.42.44.50.01. Opened in the mid-1990s and an instant hit with media and fashion celebrities, this Costes brothers' hotel marries Second Empire style with all up-to-date amenities. Doubles from €300. M° Tuileries. Over €150.

Hôtel Lion d'Or 5 rue de la Sourdière, 1er tel 01.42.60.79.04, fax 01.42.60.09.14. A friendly and very central hotel, with twenty en-suite rooms – simple but clean and recently renovated. You can check your email in the attached cybercafé. M° Tuileries. €55–70

Hôtel Meurice 228 rue de Rivoli, 1er tel 01.44.58.10.10, fax 01.44.58.10.15, www.meuricehotel.com. Palatial opulence in the style of Louis XVI, with great views over Paris. You'll be so busy having tea in the winter garden or taking a Turkish bath that the delights of Paris just on your doorstep are likely to go ignored. Doubles start at €720. M° Tuileries. Over €150.
